cake by the pound
We have half-days on Fridays each Summer. It's my favorite! I attended a retirement party at a race-track yesterday. I'm doing my best to welcome new experiences and though it took a little convincing, I'm happy I went instead of going straight home to be a lazy bones. I remember going to Puerto Rico and seeing them in an open field and that memory has stuck with me because they're so majestic. I want to go horse back riding one day. What I wouldn't do: a carriage ride in Central Park! I be feeling so bad for those horses because I think they're stored in stable in the city. And by stable, such enclosed spaces in some warehouse.
This was my first time at a race-track. I think this is one of those activities I have seen as "shit-white-people-do." Of course, it has no color so I'm proud I didn't let myself be clouded by that and dismiss the opportunity. Horses are beautiful! And they move so freakin' fast. Races happen every thirty minutes yet last about two minutes. The names are so silly and made up, I probably would have bet just based off of what they were called not even statistics. I'm not a gambler but I had a lot of fun watching my coworkers win a few dollars each race and chat and joke about topics beyond work. They did try to catch me slipping a few times! It's afterhours y'all, please I beg.
I don't have many plans beyond that this weekend. Laundry and washing my hair and thinking and planning. My mind is so focused on business. While there are things I realize it may be better that I keep to myself, I don't have to keep everything to myself. This is my life and a budding passion. I think if I stay too to myself I would miss out on messages, opportunities, partners and supporters. Does that make sense? Part of me also knows that I need to be open to advice, while not from everyone, there is much I want to handle or work out with my heart in mind. You know? I want it to be shining through. I'm also enjoying documenting the process of creation.
I'm only at the beginning and am so grateful people are willing to take a chance on me. There is hesitance in fulfilling an order on a cake that I've never made for the sake of money. My mind is much consumed by eggs, flour and sugar. How much inventory can I keep on hand? How often do need to rebuy this and that? You cannot go wrong with creating classic cakes yet as a creative person, I'm wondering what kind of funky, unique recipes I can come up with. Or find online.
I love Van Luween's Earl Grey ice cream. So good! And don't let it be in a waffle cone. I've seen recipes online for Earl Grey buttercream. I'll need some taste testers for that. Maybe with a simple vanilla cake but I've also seen it with chocolate instead. Making everything from scratch is important to me. I like being about to tell people, “thanks for your order and this is exactly what I put it in!”
And maybe one day, I'll even be able to grow the carrots I put in the carrot cake.
It's rabbit season!
xoxo,
