Downtown, We Walk

You walk faster than me
We’re going to “Check It Out!”
I beg to run up the hill
You watch me tumble down

We stop at Nick’s Diner
And have some breakfast
You chat with the waiter
Fond memories of the past

I moved with you to Brooklyn
We navigated Utica
Across Eastern Parkway
My independence is thanks to ya!

Even now you walk —
Fast, but I can keep up
Taught me not to hold it in
Lest I self destruct

Being the first grandchild
I know that I’m the favorite
And trust, I love the position
In fact — I savor it!

Our calls, our texts
The long important talks,
But most importantly,
Our downtown walks
