Siren’s Song

Tales are told to travelers who sail these seas
I know them well and can recite them to thee.
Never did I imagine a time would come
where I would hear the siren's song
and be lured away by one.

Our boat capsized a little after dawn,
next thing we knew the captain was gone.
We clung onto what little we had left.
Slowly but surely, one by one
each of my mates sank until there were none.

A song so frightening was being sung
and just when I thought I could break the trance
the siren pulled me in for a dance.
Sure that my fate was sealed,
I never considered a challenger would appear,
or that there was a monster the siren feared.

Two creatures dueled and I could only watch
as the siren's life was ended. Shocked,
sure that my end was near,
a now or never choice was made clear.
I pulled the knife strapped to my waist
and began to stab the creature with haste.

It was either he or I that fateful morning.
I made it back to town with a grave warning.
Instead, they imprisoned me, think me insane,
alleging it was my fault I went through such pain.
Never again would I see the light of day.

How absurd! Luck was by my side
it's what helped me survive that attack.
How unfortunate they found one of my friends
washed ashore with knife wounds in his back.
