Some Girls Never Made It Home

Monday, December 29, 2025

Some girls never made it home
Thick black cuffs covered their wrists

Some girls never made it home
They never again walked down that dirt path
They never spent time with family and
Shared in one last laugh

Some girls never made it home
Instead they jumped into the sea
Or stayed aboard frightened
Clasped their hands tightly
They said this prayer to thee
“God please deliver us,
Safely to the shores
Let there be a day
Our people no longer endure”

Some girls never made it home
Facing terrors unparalleled
Forced to work in the fields
As their bellies began to swell

Some girls never made it home
And the families they did create
Were swiftly torn apart
No opportunity to be a mother
Children posted up on the block

Some girls never made it home
They were never offered freedom
They died all alone

It is within us that their spirits will rise
Creative juices flow and drip down thighs
Flow into a river and birth salvation
Living on prayers from previous generations

    Can’t trust the weather man
Who for years never predicted rain
    ‘Cause we’ve partied through storms
    Fueled by generations of pain
    The children have joined us
You see they old enough to take a hit now
    Lean over, don’t fall down
Old enough to bring a bottle
    Bring the whole crew ‘round!
And the next rounds on me
    Too fearful to change
    Learned from my family
Watched them do the same — cope!

And I’ve been dealing with shame
    ‘Cause I finally looked around
There were no presents, no balloons,
    not even a clown!

    Mixing uppers with downers
Trauma only taught us to drown
Our gifts? They’d been passed down
    And was soon pawned off
When we needed a quick fix
    Swore we’d get ‘em back
    But what year is it?
This right here is all we ever knew

    Decided I wanted more
Perspective shift, felt more was in store
    The clouds parted for me
My clothes are no longer drenched
    I heard birds chirping
    While sat on park bench
    So I sing wit ‘em,
    Sun dried my eyes
    Took control back
    Gave thanks to the sky

Winds blows through blades of grass
    Through twisted strands of hair
    It is during these moments
I allow myself to not care
    About perceptions, expectations
    About making others proud
About how I choose to express myself aloud

    The dragonflies take flight
    Across the grassy knoll
    The young children lie down
    And as their bodies roll

I close my eyes and face towards
The sun — which cradles me close
    In a warm, gentle embrace,
The future — unwritten and yet
    My freedom, my escape
Is held in my hand, in the form of a pen
    Taking my far beyond
    Where fear has ever been
With my heart on my sleeve

As my commander — it leads, I follow it
To that which I have always dreamt,
    Devoted and true
    Fulfilling wishes and promises
    I never outgrew

And I gave up hunting for it
    Chose to actually live
    Found in each moment
    It began by teaching kids
Let them and you ignite me
    A renewed love for life
    My passion now overflows
    Emotions conveyed through prose

    The sky is cloud covered
    I’m an imitation in yellow
    — genuine flattery!
    Dressed up in optimism
    Joy dawned on me
There were flowers at the door
    I took the morning slow
Went to the garden to explore

    The past will remain that
There was much to be released
A full moon on my twenty-ninth?
    I’ve earned this peace

What I wouldn’t give to hear my name played on the lips of another. But maybe it’s better that you’re a wordless storyteller — a rhythmic muser, strumming from a soul level, no sheet music necessary. You called out to me, thankfully, because I never learned to read people’s intentions from paper but rather from how they evoke emotions within. I can’t play but I write my wrongs on nights like this when the world is quiet, the bottle has seeped in and I’m spilling truths from my pen into a journal I considered discarding. ‘Cause it’s filled with thoughts of a you that never existed. My own fault. I was caught in your rift, left torn between what could’ve been and what’ll never.

Listen closely and you’ll hear me
    From the mouths of those:
    Who struggle to bundle up,
    Fighting frostbite in the winter;
    Who chat incessantly during
    What you wanted to be a quiet drive;
    Speaking from learned experience
    Hoping to spare your heart;
    Born yesterday with the wisdom
    Of generations that came before;
    Passionately singing melodies that
    Ignite a dimmed flame;
    Looking in the mirror knowing
What they search for is found within.

I turn away from the screen
Remembering I am more than this job
    Sunshine washes over my being
    I meditate, much rather create
    That which helps me connect
Me to you, you to me
    A universal experience —
    Cannot be the only
    Wishing for more in store
    Yet, if I was ready
    I would be placed

    I meditate, readjusting
    Because I’m caught in-between
    Living in the present,
    Looking forward to a future
    That I’m better not knowing
Out of my head, into my body
    Learning to just be…

    Street lamps provide spotlights
    Underneath, two lovers walk
    Brushing hands and making plans
One of them hums a jingle
In the other’s pocket, a ring jangles
To the tune of their favorite song
    Which they perform together
    Now walking arm in arm
    Neither enjoys surprises
But what better time than this?
    After a day inside their
    Bubble of lover’s bliss

The one to burst it kneels
    In their heart a thrill
    Shrouded in darkness, the other
    Knows to step forward means
    Wedding bells, forever spells
    A brand new reality
    Shaking with anticipation
How much longer on bended knee?

    Jumping into open arms
    And spun around in glue
    Committed to sharing life
    Times, of happiness forseen
